"Youth Pastor Park, can we stop so I can get some snacks before we get to the retreat grounds?" KK, the high schooler in the van's third row, looked hopefully up to the front seat.
"Oh please, yes! I have to take a spaceship dump and I can't hold it anymore, bro!" Laughter sounded from the rest of the van as everyone laughed at Sarah's unexpected words. Youth Pastor Park also couldn't help himself from laughing at the girl's odd way of saying she needed to use the bathroom. It seemed like every year the kids just got more and more bold.
Shaking his head, Pastor Park sighed, "Can't you hold it? We're 30 minutes from the campgrounds." He looked in the rearview mirror at Sarah only to already see her vehemently shaking her head and rocking back and forth.
"Nah, bro, my stomach is starting to hurt real bad." Laughter ensued again at the girl's words, and another sigh dropped from Park as he began to look for an exit.
The 15-seater van hosted 12 people ranging from middle school to college plus Pastor Park and had been rowdy the whole four-hour ride to the annual winter retreat location for the church's youth. With 30 minutes to go, Pastor Park was in no way interested in stopping. But a loud "whew," exclaims of disgust, and Sarah's rocking intensifying had him quickly pulling over into an old mom-and-pop grocery store parking lot.
"Hey, don't step on my sneakers!" Paul, one of the middle schoolers, shouted as Sarah rocketed past.
"Shut up, Paul, your shoes are dirty anyway!" Laughter danced around the van again at Elizabeth, Sarah's best friend's response. Arguments fired from both sides of the middle schoolers' friend groups as well as laughter as they also filed out of the van.
"Anyone who needs to go to the bathroom, go now because I am not stopping again! We will meet back at the van in 10 minutes, so do what you gotta do and get back here. I should not have to come and find you. Make sure you stay in groups of two at least at all times. I don't want your parents mad at me because you got lost." Snickers sounded and some sneaked a look over at JB but said nothing.
Sarah, who'd been standing by the van side door hopping and rocking, slammed the door open as soon as P. Park finished and darted into the grocery store, not waiting up for anyone. Elizabeth trailed behind her at a fast speed along with Inzu, another middle schooler, and everyone else trailing behind them.
"Hey, Pastor Park, do you want me to grab something for you to snack on while I'm in there?" Hwan, the only college guy in the group, stood at the driver's door waiting for a response, only for Pastor Park to shake his head and hop out. Together they walked into the grocery store after locking up the van and ensuring no one was in there.
Ten minutes passed quickly, and in segmented groups, the kids walked back to the van, Sarah being the happiest among them and KK the loudest while arguing with Elizabeth about something. Pastor Park and the four college young adults were already standing at the van when the kids stopped in their trek and stared at something behind them and the parked van.
"Oh my gosh, what is that?" Inzu shouted as she pointed to a large green fog that was racing towards the van and the four people standing next to it.
"Look! Look! Pastor Park! Song Mi! Run! Run! Faith, Faith! Run!" Kids in the group began to break away and run back for the grocery store, urging and pulling others to follow. Faith was one of the first to start running in the group, not caring for the reason and not caring to look back and see why the others were following close behind after looking back.
Fog quickly covered the group of four, making it hard to see where the grocery store door was without the shouts and yelling of the youth in front of them. Burning blossomed in their chests as they breathed in the fog, making it harder to run. Hwan and Faith were the first ones to make it into the store holding hands, which they immediately dropped as soon as they realized what they'd been doing. Song-mi followed close behind them and Pastor Park behind her. Shoving kids aside, he slammed the door of the grocery store and locked it all while commanding the kids to step back.
Sending a quick prayer up while roughly coughing, he watched the bottom of the door to see if the green fog would slip in and sagged in gratitude after realizing it wasn't. Tuning back in, all he could hear was the questions and shouts of his students as they watched out the large grocery store window in fear.
"What are we going to do?!"
"Pastor Park, are we gonna die?!"
"We're doomed!"
"I want to call my mom!" The young adults tried their best to calm the situation down, but they couldn't hide the fear on their faces as they also watched the fog swirl as if staring back at them.
By now, the one grocery store clerk on duty came to the front of the store to see what all the commotion was about and stalled in fear when she saw what was outside the window. She opened her mouth to ask what was going on, then they all screamed when something large banged against the grocery store window.
